The company was founded in Detroit in 1909 and by the 1920s it had become the largest manufacturer of vacuum cleaners in the US producing 2,000 brand new vacuum cleaners each day. Today, the company is part of the Electrolux family of home care products. Eureka makes uprights, canisters, stick vacs, handhelds, steam cleaners and other home cleaning systems. And their products are known for being no-frills, affordable machines.
These are the best rated canister vacuums the company makes:
1. Eureka AirExcel Canister Vacuum, 990A
Eureka AirExcel Compact No Loss of Suction Canister Vacuum 990A is a masterfully engineered and designed canister vacuum that delivers optimum performance, durability and convenience.
Just like other canister vacuums, the Eureka 990A combines the powerful suction of an upright vacuum and the convenience of a stick vacuum. It uses the multi-cyclonic filtration technology; suction is shot through centrifugal forces and particles are trapped through conical filters.
- Powerful Multi-Cyclonic System
- Lightweight vacuum
- HEPA Filter
- Cleans Carpets & Barefloors
- Easy Empty Dust Cup
The AirExcel is a very lightweight bagless canister vacuum. It uses cyclonic technology which involves generating rapidly spinning air to throw the particles out of the air-path and into the dust canister. This approach helps keep the filters clean and ensures no loss of suction while you’re vacuuming.
The 990A is powered by a 9-amp motor which is not all that common as far as full size vacuums go, most use a 12 amp version. This however does not sacrifice suction power thanks to the aforementioned cyclonic technology. This vacuum has a 124 watts/lb power-to-weight ratio and offers 35% more power for its weight, compared to the standard in its class.
Thanks to its powerful suction, lightweight and rubberized wheels hard surfaces is where the 990A excels. It’s easy to maneuver and move around while still powerful enough to pull up most debris. A bare floor brush can also be extended via a foot switch on the nozzle and is usually retracted when cleaning carpets.
This Eureka canister uses a HEPA H6 filter that captures 99% of the dust and allergens with a diameter of 0.3 microns or more. The HEPA filter is not washable and must be replaced about every 6 months. The easy to empty dust cup allows you to empty the dust quickly and easily without creating a mess.
Several tools are provided with this canister including:
- A telescopic wand
- A crevice tool
- A dusting brush
- carpet and bare floor brush (this is the main nozzle)
This unit doesn’t come without disadvantages, the power cord is short. It is 16.5 feet in length and while most canister vacuums have shorter power cords than uprights, 16.5 feet is still short for a canister. However, with the long 6 foot hose the AirExcel reach is not that bad.
2. Eureka Mighty Mite Canister Vacuum, 3670G
A very popular, low price choice. In 1982, the Eureka Mighty Mite debuted to accolades from adoring fans. Time named it one of the ten best product designs of the year, and customers snapped the little cleaners up as fast as the factory could make them. Thirty years later, the Mighty Mite is a survivor. Though it has received some updates and now sells for $89 ($70 on sale), it’s still the same straight suction, bagged canister design that debuted back in the ’80s.
- Durable design great for Home, Auto and Garage cleaning
- Power-Touch handle with easy-to-use fingertip controls; deluxe floor brush; bare-floor nozzle
- Additional port allows blowing airflow to shoot leaves and other debris easily
- Lightweight for portability and convenience
- 20′ cord and lightweight style for quick and efficient cleaning
- Ideal for Quick and Efficient Cleaning
- Convenient for Home and Auto
Something that has caused some confusion around this product is its name. There are similar looking products with similar names and model numbers (like the 3670A). These models have a weaker version of the motor and are cheaper, but other than that they look very similar, and people who aren’t paying much attention can easily get confused by the whole deal. The 3670A isn’t too bad either, but let’s stay focused on why the 3670G Might Mite.
This canister vacuum doubles as a vacuum and blower. Mighty Mite’s filtration system consists of a self-sealing bag and a smaller, non-HEPA washable filter. The air escape in the back of the machine doubles as a convenient port for blow-out reverse suction that will mimic a shop vac and help you to clean some messes such as leaves in the garage, or dry wall powder, without changing the bag too often, or even clogging the hose. You can use the machine to vacuum several different floor types, as well as to clean out garages with its blower port. The vacuum uses dirt bags that hold up to 96 ounces, greatly reducing how often you have to replace them. The bags are easy to remove and contain the dust and particles well.
This straight-suction vacuum was designed for use on short carpets hardwood floors, tiles and other types of flat flooring and that’s where it excels. The 12-amp motor provides an impressive suction power. And the auto-shutoff safety feature is a nice addition that protects both you and the vacuum in case the motor overheats.
The 20-foot long cord is another great feature. It means that you can clean-up many areas, without unplugging the device. However, this unit does not have a cord rewind function but it has a cord wrap area where you can store the wire neatly.
Accessories and attachments are one of the greatest strengths of canister models, and the best canister vacuum cleaners usually are the ones who are capable of supporting the widest arsenal of attachments. This particular vacuum however has a few of the most basic tools in the box:
- The upholstery nozzle
- Carpet floor nozzle
- Crevice tool
3. Eureka Pet Lover 3684F
As the name implies, the Eureka Pet Lover 3684F is designed specifically with pet lovers in mind. It is a step up from the Eureka Mighty Mite 3670G for only about $10-15 difference in price.
- Canister Vacuum with Pet Attachments
- HEPA filter captures 99.97 percent of dust and pet dander for a cleaner home
- Arm & Hammer odor-eliminating dust bag eliminates pet odors and captures allergy-causing pet dander
- 20-foot cord length, telescoping wand, crevice tool
- Weighs less than 9 pounds
Just like the 3670G, the 3684F is equipped with a 12 amp motor which also powers the blower port. And as expected, it provides impressive suction power. Also, just like the 3670G, this unit comes with 20-foot power cord. That and its 8.6 pounds weight gives the Pet Lover great maneuverability and portability.
The 3684F Pet Lover uses Arm & Hammer odor-eliminating dust bags. The bags are designed to eliminate pet odors and capture allergy-causing pet dander. Two bags and one set of filters are included in the package. They are 2.6 qt in size, so you don’t have to worry about having to replace the dust bag over and over again regularly. It’s even more effective in getting rid of dander thanks to the Pet Power Paw attachment, which has plastic teeth that loosens pet hair that’s attached to carpet and upholstery, rubber strips that pull the dander safely from these, and bristles that help the vacuum cleaner in sucking up the hairs. The issue with pet hair is it can easily tangle and become deep rooted into such surfaces, and simple agitation simply won’t remove them.
Unlike the 3670G this canister comes with HEPA filtration. A great feature for removing dust, pollen, mold, and allergens from the surrounding air.
- HEPA filtration prohibits allergens from getting out
- Strong suction
- Lightweight – Weighs only 8.6 pounds
- Pet odor is eliminated by the bags.
- Eradicate pet hair on stairs and upholstery with the “pet power paw” attachment.
- Compared to the Eureka 3670G, it has a wider cleaning path (11 inches).
- Long extension wand equals great reach
- blower function
- A bit noisy
- Short warranty – 1 year
- Will not deep clean carpet or rugs
- No cord rewind
